Jim Cotrel's PledgePage
On June 27th 2004, I will be competing in the Ford New York City Triathlon as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s TEAM IN TRAINING. The triathlon is Olympic distance, which consists of a .9-mile swim in the Hudson River, a 25-mile bike ride into The Bronx and finishing with a 6.2-mile run in Central Park. Contrary to popular belief, I am confident that I can successfully complete the whole 32.1-mile race; it is the location of each leg of the race that I’m worried about.
As a member of Team In Training, I have pledged to train on behalf of two honored teammates, Daniel Morris, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at age 5 and Lauren Maclise, who was diagnosed with Acute Myelogeneous Leukemia at age 25. Thirty years ago, there was no effective treatment for leukemia. Thanks to research funded in part by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the survival rate for the most common form of childhood leukemia has improved from 4% in 1960 to 85% in 1999. Over 106,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with a blood cancer in 2004-an estimated 58,300 will die. Although the cause of these cancers remains unknown, steady advances in research and treatment are bringing us closer to cures. Given these facts, I will try and raise at least $3,000.00. The funds will be used for research, patient aid and education. My goal is to raise $2000 by April and another $1000 or more by June. Please return your contribution, along with the donation form, as soon as possible. All donations will be greatly appreciated. Please donate what you can. All donations are 100% tax-deductible.
